What is Meant By The Name Lumia
“Lumia is the term coined by 20th Century Artist Thomas Wilfred to refer to art created from light..”
Lumia. Nice name for a smart phone, isn’t it? It sounds unique, futuristic, and stylish. They say a name defines one’s personality.
Does this rule apply for Lumia? In an article by Reuters, Nokia CEO Stephen Elops recalls the history of how they coined the name of their new phone line. Amidst the buzz on smart phones’ increasing popularity, Nokia held a meeting sometime in August 2011, to decide on the name of the company’s latest device.
“Why wait till tomorrow or next week? We could make the decision today. And we did.” - Stephen Elops, Nokia CEO
So if you are expecting a long history on how the name Lumia came about, well, it wasn’t the case for Nokia. Technically, it took only a day to decide on “Lumia”, since they have to act fast and waste no more time.
Lumia is derived from Lumi, meaning “snow” in the Finnish language. But before the release of the first Lumia phones, 800 and 710, reports came out that the name “Lumia” means prostitute in Spanish language. Really now?
Digging more into this, an article in NBC New proved that the word “Lumia” really had an awkward meaning in Spain, but not all who can speak Spanish knows this, since it came from early Gypsy dialects, and is not a commonly used word, only spoken in Spanish dialects with Gypsy influences.

Knocking aside the funny aberration in choosing the name (since words can really have different meanings in different languages), the Nokia Lumia, the smart phone we all love, is now gaining increasing attention in the mobile phone market. The sleek and classy device series, some even receiving awards and citations, had proven that the unique design powered by Microsoft Windows Phone 8 platform, incorporated with the latest Nokia innovations, and added with the amazing Carl Zeiss optical lens technology, can stand up its ground against other smart phone brands today. With all the features offered, who wouldn’t love Lumia?
