Nokia Asha 502 and Asha 503 appear online

Nokia seems to be in no mood to rest after the laurels earned by its Asha 501 budget feature phone, as the company is reportedly working on two new Asha devices, if a rumour is to be believed.
In line with the design language of the recently launched Nokia Asha 501, the company reportedly has the Asha 502 and Asha 503 phones in the pipeline. This Is Nokia, a Nokia fan website cites sources to reveal the specifications of the Nokia Asha 502, codenamed Pegasus and the Nokia Asha 503, codenamed Lanai. The site claims that both of the alleged Asha phones could be launched in Q3 or Q4 of 2013.

The site notes that the Nokia Asha 502 will feature a polycarbonate design with a 3.2 to 3.5-inch scratch resistant display which is said to be better than that of the Asha 501, though the source is not sure about the screen resolution. It is likely to be slimmer and lighter. The RAM could be in the range of 128 to 512 MB while the processor is expected to be clocked at 1-1.2GHz. The Asha 502 is said to support 3G connectivity, the feature that was widely missed on the Asha 501. It could sport a 5-megapixel rear camera with the new Nokia Camera app for Asha devices. The site also claims that the device could support dual-SIM.

Meanwhile, the alleged Nokia Asha 503 is said to feature a polycarbonate and glass design. The display is likely to be around 3.2 to 3.4-inches. It could be powered by a 1-1.5GHz processor with a GPU and RAM could be in the range of 128 to 512MB. The Asha 503 is also likely to be a dual SIM phone with 3G connectivity.

The site also notes that both the yet to be announced Asha devices feature Nokia SLAM Bluetooth transfer for faster sharing of files, pictures and even videos. However, there is no word from Nokia about the possible availability and pricing of the Asha phones, yet.

A highly affordable, 3G mobile phones

Nokia expanded its range of classically designed mobile phones with the launch of the Nokia 208 Dual SIM, which combines the familiar ‘candybar’ design with Nokia’s signature bold colors and 3.5G-capable Internet speeds.

Popular social apps, smarter imaging and productivity features such as Internet-sharing and Mail for Exchange support make these phones some of the most versatile at their price point; perfect for people balancing work and play.

“The Nokia 208 Dual SIM is designed for people who like a classic phone and traditional keypad but don’t want to miss out on smartphone experiences, like staying connected to social media and accessing the Internet,” said Timo Toikkanen, executive vice president, Mobile Phones, Nokia. “As one of our most affordable 3G devices yet, the Nokia 208 Dual SIM offers a perfect balance of performance, features and quality.”

Smarter features deliver greater versatility
It is ideal for use on-the-go, with a familiar, alphanumeric keypad for speedy texts and messaging, and Mail for Exchange for staying on top of work email and calendar appointments. The Transfer app, available today in the Nokia Store, allows people to sync contacts directly from their smartphone and transforms the Nokia 208 Dual SIM into a secondary or companion device, perfect for travel. The Nokia 208 Dual SIM has the added benefit of Nokia’s Easy Swap technology, allowing people to change SIM cards without turning off the device, to take advantage of more favorable tariffs.

Consistent with devices across the Nokia Mobile Phones portfolio, it offers faster and more affordable mobile Internet experiences. Support for 3G coupled with the data compression available with Nokia Xpress Browser help people enjoy rich mobile experiences at lower cost. These experiences include top social apps such as Facebook and Twitter, alongside video streaming through YouTube and Vuclip. For even greater versatility, people can also use the Nokia 208 Dual SIM as a portable modem, simply by connecting the device to their laptop via a USB cable for Internet sharing anywhere, anytime.

Playful imaging features and Nokia durability add to versatility
The smart camera features of the Nokia 208 Dual SIM make taking pictures more enjoyable, with voice-guided self-portrait, sequential shot and panorama mode giving people more playful imaging options. Sharing photos is a breeze with the Slam feature that allows people to share images with another Bluetooth-enabled device in just a few clicks.

It delivers outstanding battery life – up to 20 days of standby time for the Nokia 208 Dual SIM – helping people stay connected for longer. Easy to clean and scratch-proof, the handset is durable for everyday use as well as more extreme conditions, such as hot or dusty environments.

Nokia Asha 501 : A Small wonder

While smartphone market surges, feature phones still make up the greater share of the total mobile phone sales worldwide. Therefore, it makes sense for a titan like Nokia to launch a phone that offers all the goodness of a smartphone at the price of a feature phone.
Enter the new Asha 501, launched in India recently by the company's CEO Stephen Elop. This smart feature phone (as Nokia calls its Asha handsets) is an important device for the company, especially since Android devices are getting cheaper by the day (case in point being Samsung Galaxy Star and Intex Cloud X3).

So, does the new Nokia Asha 501 has what it takes to beat low-priced droids and rule the budget handset market? We had the same question when we got our hands on the device. Let's see what we found out through this review...

Design:
Nokia Asha 501 is an attractive little gadget that catches the eye as soon as you set your sight on it. Just like the Lumia 520, it betrays its price tag considering the quality of material used in building it. Its designing has been done well, such that the polycarbonate back and glass front merge seamlessly at the sides.

The front has a single hardware key (the Back button), while right side houses the volume rocker and Power/Lock key. On top are the microUSB port, charger inlet and earphone jack, whereas the left side is bare. Flip it to the back to check out the small rear camera and the key to remove the back.

Overall, we are quite impressed by the design of the Asha 501, which resembles the Lumia series to a considerable degree.

Hardware:
Coming to the specs, Asha 501 has a 3-inch screen with 320x240p resolution. The display is decent, with good colours and contrast. The phone has 128MB internal storage and 64MB RAM, figures that Android users will scoff at. However, these numbers are decent considering the platform that powers the handset. You get microSD support up to a healthy 32GB capacity, with a free 4GB card coming out of the box.

On the back, you get a 3.15MP camera, but there is no LED flash and front-facing unit. Connectivity options in the device include 2G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and microUSB. While the proprietary charger (2mm pin) comes in the box, the phone also supports microUSB charging.

Software
This is where the magic happens. Nokia Asha 501 runs on the all-new Asha 1.0 platform, a mobile operating system that is heavily influenced by the now-dead MeeGo OS. The software is based on lots of swipes (thus explaining the absence of a Home or Options key) and even supports multitasking in its own unique way.

To unlock the phone, you can either click the Power/Lock key or tap twice on the touchscreen in quick succession. As the screen lights up, you swipe either to the left or right in order to open the apps menu; a swipe to either side from there brings you to the 'other' home screen called Fastland(more on that coming up).

What about apps, we wondered... Well, the revamped Asha 1.0 platform brings a host of apps with it, though many buyers excited about WhatsApp will be disappointed. However, what you do get here are applications like Facebook, Twitter, document reader, Weather, a combined mailbox, notes, calculator, calendar, music player and several others. Nokia is offering 40 free EA games optimized for the OS with this phone as well. If you want more, then you can head to Apps and AppNow. These two are dedicated app stores that stock several applications, like WeChat and third-party web browsers, music players and the likes, along with a host of games (paid as well as free).

All apps are easy to navigate through and you just need to swipe left or press the Back button whenever you want to go return to the previous page or close the app altogether. Each time you are about to close a running app, you are asked if you want to exit, thus avoiding chances of accidentally closing it.

Coming to multitasking, you get Fastlane - a home screen that shows the recent apps you have used, along with reminders. It is quite simple to use, with the whole list accessible via a scroll down the screen. However, the sad part is that you cannot pick up from where you left off when you close an app and each time you need to start from the beginning.

You also have a Notification Bar (just swipe down from top opens it). Here you get push notifications about unread mails and SMSs, missed calls and four toggles (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile data and Silent profile). When the phone is not in use, it displays the time, date, and information like unread SMSs and missed calls on an interface that Nokia calls Glance Screen.

We feel that the platform has a lot of strengths, though it needs to be a little more polished before it can take the fight to budget Androids and score a win.

Performance
The new Asha 501 smart feature phone by Nokia is not the fastest phone around and it does not pretend to be so. It is a budget device that offers a decent smartphone experience, with no lag. The hardware and software of the phone are tightly integrated, ensuring that the user experience is smooth and largely without the issues that plague cheap handsets (poor build quality, frequent hanging etc).

Instead, we like that the low-power Asha 501's capacitive touchscreen is responsive and the keyboard layout in different apps is well designed. Though we punched the wrong key while typing a few times, once you get used to it, the keyboard becomes easy to handle. Despite the software being so new, we had no trouble at all, meaning that it is well optimized for the tasks it is supposed to handle.

Camera Asha 501's 3.2MP rear camera takes pictures that offer good colours but do not display sufficient contrast and details. However, if you are going to upload most of the images you take on social networking sites, then it will be good enough for the job.

Audio in the phone is quite loud, though not exactly crystal clear. Viewing videos is certainly not a good experience on a device with such a small display and resolution. Its battery lasted nearly a day and a half on a single charge when 2G internet was kept turned most of the time. Usage pattern included a couple of hours of internet browsing, nearly 5-6 hours of music playback, an hour each of gaming and videos and approximately half an hour tinkering with other apps.

While we like several things in this phone, we had trouble setting up email accounts. The phone gave a lot of trouble while setting up Gmail and Yahoo accounts automatically, thus forcing us to do it manually. Similarly, we could not import contacts easily on the device. The absence of 3G meant that we could not use high speed internet on the go (2G remains painfully slow for our taste). Another thing we did not like was that all apps start afresh each time we have to exit them.

Rivals
Budget Android phones are available aplenty in the market today, with Samsung Galaxy Star being the closest rival to Asha 501. The case against Star is that its 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM and 4GB internal storage (theoretically much superior to Asha 501) do not give it enough muscle to render a smooth user experience. However, it has a bigger selection of apps, though such a low powered device cannot make full use of the functionality of the robust Android platform and there is usually a lot of lag in this device when it is filled with several apps.

This is the strong point of Asha 501, which did not show any signs of lag during our review. (We asked a Samsung salesperson at a New Delhi outlet which of the two is better and he/she pointed towards the Nokia handset, though he/she never said anything out loud.)

Conclusion:
Nokia Asha 501 is an exciting prospect for people who are graduating from feature phones to internet-connected handsets for the first time. It is well stocked with apps and features and offers all the functionalities of an entry-level smart-device. We like the seamless design as well as how the software and hardware complement each other at all times.

Nokia Asha 210 listed online for Rs. 3,999

Nokia Asha 210 listed online for Rs. 3,999, but not officially available yet
After almost a month of being announced, the Nokia Asha 210 has been listed on an online store for Rs. 3,999.

The feature phone that sports a QWERTY hardware keyboard and a dedicated WhatsApp key has been listed on e-commerce portal Saholic. However, it's not available for purchase at the time of writing this post and only the Black colour variant of the phone has been listed.

We checked the status of the phone's availability with Nokia and got a response that the phone is still not officially available and will go on sale in June. The listing was first spotted by BGR India.

Nokia had announced the Asha 210 in April. As we mentioned the phone comes with a dedicated WhatsApp button and free lifetime subscription to the messaging service. The phone comes with the ability to launch WhatsApp direct from contact cards in the Phonebook.

The Nokia Asha 210 comes with a 2-megapixel camera that can be accessed through a dedicated key even when the keypad is locked. The smart camera also offers a choice of image capture, editing and sharing options, including a self-portrait that lets you capture perfectly centred self portraits, even without a front-facing camera. The built-in voice guides the user to ensure they are in the frame, before taking the shot. The phone also comes with support for editing of images directly from the camera app and easy sharing of images to social networks.

Nokia Asha 210 also has a dedicated button for turning the Wi-Fi on or off. The phone comes Slam sharing feature, also seen in Nokia Asha 205 and Nokia 206. Slam makes it easy to share content over Bluetooth by eliminating the need of pairing the devices. FM radio is included as well. Asha 210 comes with Nokia Xpress Browser which, according to Nokia, reduces data consumption by up to 90 percent. The Nokia Asha 210 also features Nokia Nearby, a web app that lets people discover points of interest such as restaurants, shopping and ATM machines close to their location. Other pre-installed apps include YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and support for popular email accounts such as Gmail.

Nokia Asha 210 will be available in single-SIM and dual-SIM options featuring Nokia's EasySwap technology that enables consumers to change SIM cards without having to turn off the device.

The phone comes with a 1200mAh battery rated at 12 hours of 2G talktime.

The Nokia Asha 210 will be available in Yellow, Cyan, Black, Magenta, and White colour options.

Nokia asha 210

Meet Nokia Asha 210, the

ultimate social phone

Today Nokia unveiled the latest addition to its Asha lineup. The QWERTY-packing Nokia Asha 210 featurephone comes in both single SIM and dual-SIM flavors and brings entry level functionality at an extremely attractive price point. Nokia Asha 210 single SIM version Combining a 2.4" LCD screen...

first handset to feature a dedicated WhatsApp button, which gives you quick access to the instant messing app that comes preinstalled.

Combining a 2.4" LCD screen of QVGA resolution (320 x 240 pixels) with a four-row full QWERTY keyboard, the Nokia Asha 210 is targeted at younger users that do lots of texting and have a limited budget.
Nokia Asha 210 is the first handset to feature a dedicated WhatsApp button, which gives you quick access to the instant messing app that comes preinstalled.
The Asha 210 comes with Wi-Fi connectivity and a dedicated Wi-Fi on/off hardware toggle. Sadly the feature phone lacks any fast cellular network support like 3G or LTE, settling for dual-band GPRS/EDGE. Local connectivity is covered by microUSB and Bluetooth.
The Nokia Asha 210 offers a 2 megapixel camera at the back, but there's no front-facing snapper. The handset has a 3.5mm audio jack and while its internal memory is limited to just 64MB, there's a microSD card slot for expanding it by up to 32GB.
The dual-SIM version will also come with support for Easy Swap, meaning you can exchange the secondary SIM without powering off the handset.
The Nokia Asha 210 is going to be available in yellow, cyan, black, magenta, and white when it goes on sale (sometime in this quarter). The estimated retail price for the Nokia Asha 210 is around $72.
